Felíz cumpleaños, Chente

with 3 comments

As you can tell, things on my part have been quiet because of classes. I’m working on a series of posts for L.A. Eastside and here that will probably take me another month to complete. I need myself to get down and write or expand the current drafts. I want to make sure they’re complete before I schedule them to be published because I think they will be something of interest to readers of L.A. Eastside, including those blogs that just link to other blogs.

Today is Vicente Fernández’s 69th birthday! Here’s a video of Chente singing “A mi manera” at a sold out plaza de toros.

I think this video is from a performance at Mexico City’s Plaza de Toros. It was a free show and he announced that if he was not able to fill la Plaza de Toros (it’s the largest in the world), he would retire. It was full to the brim.

  3. I like Chente, don’t get me wrong. But what I can’t stand about him (or maybe its the Mexican recording industry), is that Chente (and son) and Antonio Augilar (and son) have a freakin’ MONOPOLY on ranchero music.

You cannot tell me that these are the only 2 families in Mexico with talented ranchero singers. No, I don’t believe that sheeeeet. Where are all the talented Ranchera singers in Mexico? Why are they not given a chance to succeed, only Chente’s and Antonio’s sons?

Sorry for the rant, but I think this is another face of Mexican corruption.

On a side note, Happy B-Day Chente.
