What moves me.

with 3 comments

I’m disappointed that mariachis have moved away from the typical folk music of corridos, songs about working in the fields, and love and gravitated toward increasingly complex song structures. As a member of Mariachi Veritas de Harvard, I feel we should set the example and instill other mariachis to stay in touch with the roots of the music they play.

That’s what moves me the most every time I hear a mariachi.

These next clips represent what mariachis should be playing:

This is what mariachis should not do:

What bugs me about this is the conga in the background. Who the hell adds congas to a mariachi song? This is not some salsa/merengue song; what they did is near sacrilege (to someone who takes it as serious as me). I’m fine with musical innovation, songs that showcase musical prowess, or pay homage to another culture, but there are times when people go too far; Mariachi Divas does exactly that in that song and most other songs with congas and any other percussion instruments.

It’s time to return to the roots.

  1. Yo man,

While feel you on the importance of maintaining the roots of mariachi, I think that by innovating it its definitely bringing it to larger audiences. If you really think about it, who is keeping mariachi alive today, its young people, how are most of them doing it, playing just like the clips that you posted.

Dont worry man, mariachi music has been around for a 100 years and its definitely going to maintain its roots. Its all about expression and if more people are doing it through mariachi, changing the style around then why not man. To anyone who cares, they know that Cielito Lindo is a beautiful mariachi song, and not usually played like that. On the other hand to people who dont know the genre are gonna be curious and maybe become mariachi listeners. I have seen Divas before and they are quite the act.

Hope MV is treating you well.

  3. The Divas clip almost sounds as if the music was added to the background for the video production, not as if it’s part of the music. Do you think that might be the case?
